Zimbabwe Tour

Hwange National Park: Visit Hwange National Park is the largest natural game reserve in Zimbabwe and is home to the largest elephant population in the country. With over 100 mammal species and 400 bird species, including Africa’s Big 5, this park is amazing for game activities and bird watching. The park is also home to all of Zimbabwe’s specially protected animals, with units including the Painted Dog Conservation Program and the Lion Conservation Unit. The park is a great space to study Zimbabwe’s wildlife, conservation pressures, human-wildlife conflict mitigation as well as animal migration and tracking.

Victoria Falls Viewing: Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning ‘The Smoke That Thunders’) or Shungu Namutitima (meaning ‘Boiling Water’), the majestic Victoria Falls is a waterfall located on the Zambezi River. It is located in a town in western Zimbabwe which also goes by the same name. David Livingstone, a European missionary, named it after the British monarch, Queen Victoria. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is known to be the world’s largest sheet of falling water. This geological spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe as it lies on the two countries’ borders. Victoria Falls has a natural catwalk across from the falls on the Zimbabwean side which provides for clear viewing. The catwalk trail is dotted with written information which acquaints viewers with the geomorphological facts on the falls. When visiting the falls, one is sure to get drenched in water somewhere along the trail, especially in high season, as the spray from the falls rises to a height of over 1 300 feet and is visible from up to 30 miles away. Another way of viewing the falls is from the air in a helicopter that has bubble-shaped windows that are specially designed to make for good panoramic viewing. Participants who are interested in this may communicate with their EDU Africa facilitator to make an arrangement.

The Boma Dinner & Drum Show: The Boma is a major highlight when visiting Victoria Falls. It is located on the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate and open for dinner daily from 7 pm. The evening begins with a warm welcome from traditional dancers at the entrance and the ceremonious adornment of each guest in a ‘chitenge’ (African print sarong). Thereafter, an authentic Zimbabwean meal experience that consists of multiple courses broken down into platters, campfire soups, various salads and vegetarian dishes, a braai (barbeque) buffet with game meats and stews, and finally, an assortment of desserts. Among the food options is the mopane worm (a high protein local delicacy) that is a thrilling first-time culinary experience for many. Djembe drumming, singing, dancing, and laughter characterize the interactive.
